Meriam Hodge has been a member of the Lower 9th Ward Voter’s Coalition since November 2018 and accepted the nomination and position of Historian in Feb. 2021. Her home was in the Lower 9th Ward from birth to adulthood, in advance of a career in Telecommunications out of state. Meriam visited each year, identifying changes and sharing in tragedies. Family and neighborhood roots secure her relationship to the Lower 9, to New Orleans, and our State. She retired in 2013 and returned to Louisiana in 2018. Her time and effort in the Voter’s Coalition are spent supporting ways to emphasize the power of the vote. Meriam’s parents promoted a high priority on education and responsibility. With this perspective, she works toward helping to increase informed voter participation. Voter turnout numbers are low in the Lower 9. But the numbers are moving up with voter registrations. She credits the rise to the Voter’s Coalition’s welcomed presence in the community, led by the President and VP. Furnishing Registration Drives, Get Out the Vote campaigns, Canvassing, Seminars, Forums, and actions with partnerships at the community level, are some of the effective ways the L9thWVC uses to capture more interest in voter registration and participation.
